I have a mesquite tree that is dead. When I investigated I found multiple holes in the trunk and limbs. After watching for a few minutes a 1 inch blue-ish green colored bug crawled out of one of the holes. The question is did the bugs kill the tree or did the tree die and the bugs just found an “affordable” home?

I don’t know what killed it but are you going to cut it down and keep some of the wood? Great for smoking meats on the grill or use in a smoker.
Borers killed my neighbors nectarine tree and have almost killed the peach tree at the other neighbors house. These things can kill a tree in just a couple of seasons.
It’s hard to tell for sure. Many insects don’t show up till the plant is dead (termites). Some insects carry diseases that kill the plant. Some insects are the source of death (borers). It is very possible that borers killed your tree. If this is true then your other trees and shrubs are at risk. Take action and remove the existing tree.(burn all of it if possible to kill the bugs inside) I know its great for smoking but do you want to take the risk of letting these insects do more damage on your property. Check your other trees and plants carefully for infestation. Treat other plants in the area to prevent their deaths as well.
